Sun 29th Aug: A walk by the canal.

29/08/2021
Our next social gathering will be a short walk along the Grand Western Canal, meeting at Tiverton Canal Basin at 10:30

There is usually plenty to photograph at the basin, including the departure of the horse drawn barge at 11.30, as well as lots of wildlife (you can often spot kingfishers at the basin). For food and drinks, there's the Ducks Ditty café/bar in a converted barge (open from 11.00) and the Canal Tea Room and Gardens (open from 10:30), plus plenty of seats/tables on the lawn by the basin.

The basin is off Canal Hill in Tiverton {EX16 4HX}. If you're coming from Wellington, take the M5 or A38 to junction 27 then either the A361 North Devon link road (take the first Tiverton exit onto the A396) or a 'country route' through Sampford Peverell & Halberton. There are plenty of signs for Grand Western Canal en-route. Note though that the route into Tiverton via Blundell's Rd has had roadworks on and off recently. Check for travel/roadworks updates if you plan to come that way or you may find yourself taking the detour all the way back to and along the link road!.

Parking at the basin is by pay & display and costs £1.70 for 2 hours or £3.50 all day, paid by cash or by telephone.
